Wide angle shot of Coast Road House

One of the most recognisable valley regions in Ireland sets the scene for the location of this modern homestead. In a perfectly concealed wooded gorge at the foothills of the Glens plateau, a tired family farmhouse was chosen as a replacement dwelling by a local family to provide the site for their contemporary, bright, and sustainable new home.

The clients, with a view to future proofing and to lessen the impact on the surrounding environment, stated early on they preferred a single-storey family home. They thoughtfully requested an eco-friendly proposal from inception stage. Design sketches initially produced a simple 2-block form sitting parallel to the valley and surging toward the views of the north channel sea. These protruded elements would ensure the main living spaces within, lavish the sea views. A third block was introduced housing the bedroom wing and all zones are linked by a spacious light-filled hallway.

The appealing nature of the existing mature gardens meant the sea view was not the only crucial aspect of the breakout spaces, the home had to be permeable to the surrounding gardens on all sides.

Hallway with left hand glass side and doors leading off to the right

A beautifully crafted natural stone clad wall is to be admired on the approach to the house. Carefully tended planting and greenery lead to the cocooned front door, it’s difficult not to be drawn to the warm wooden tones which line this entrance foyer. Here in the main hall, there are glimpses of the impending view and light soaks into the space with the help of carefully positioned rooflights.

The vast greenery beyond, instinctively draws visitors to the main open plan area of the home. Here the full impact of the site is experienced. To the left a full gable of glass directed at the morning sun, is elevated above the sea beyond. Straight ahead the beautiful south facing garden pours its charm into the main dining area through a wall of canopied glass. To the right, a handsomely crafted warm wooden kitchen and impressive stone wall frame a view towards the face of the mountains.
